Mar 25th Letter

BURRRRRRRRRRRRR. I am shivering. i am so freaking cold. Its 40 this morning and i woke up and go out of my room and Elder Kuila was up and had the door open and it was cold, he watch me come out and freak out how cold it was and said GOOD MORNING. I hurried and jump in the nice hot shower I felt like I was in Hyrum again and I was like holy crap NOOOOOO. So a good start to the morning right?? haha

Let’s see what do I need to update you on......................... hmmmmm............... ok here we go.

On Tuesday it was nice and warm and my companion hates it because he gets a lot of sun and turns really dark. So he is wearing this really funny looking hat and we start walking and I was laughing the whole time. He said hey man you never know we might get someone to talk to us, well we did we got a in active member who saw us walking past the park where he was with his son and he said he was wondering who it was walking looking like a word that I can’t say at the moment. haha but it was funny. But we met with Shawn Beard he is doing really awesome. We watched the restoration DVD and he said that afterwards he felt so peaceful and so good. We helped him recognize the spirit and to gain that testimony. We asked him if he believed that Joseph Smith is and was a prophet. He said that its new cause of the things he was raised up believing but he said that if god had a prophet and 12 on the earth when he was here why couldn't there be here today. So it makes sense to him that we have a prophet and 12 apostles. He is excited to watch conference soon. We ended the night with going to the church and playing basketball with nonmembers and this one kid came up and asked us if we had a youth program and ask if he could come to church unfortunate he didn't come to church :(

Thursday morning was very interesting. I woke up and got a text from President Pingree asking to come to my companion study. Now what the heck am I doing wrong having President come to all my meeting and studies. hahaa this is the second time in 5 days that he has seen me. Man I feel like I’m in trouble or something. haha but he came and sat in on our companion study It was good for him to sit in and give some feedback. I guess it was funnier to Elder Kuila because he said that I was way nervous when I didn't even feel like I was oh well. So you know the scene in the best two years when elder Calhoun is getting excited to teach someone in their apartment, yeah well that is how I felt when he was coming hahahaha. But we got a call that morning about an inactive member in our ward that was in the hospital and needed a blessing. Unfortunately we couldn't give it because it was outside of our area but we got someone to go visit with her. We did some service for a Presbyterian church. I guess it was a huge garage sell for their church and there youth program so we had to help and move things around and price things it was good to get our image and name out there doing community service

Friday we got a new Investigator and his name is John and he is friends of an investigator that we are teaching. He has always been there when we have been over to teach Michael but he would always leave. But this time he asked if he could sit in and get some good word so we said of course. After talking with him he is really spiritual but not religious if that makes sense. So he loves hearing the word and reading but doesn’t like going to churches. But we talked and he said that he is feeling punished by God cause he has messed up in his life we told him that he isn’t being punished but being tested. So we talked to him about the atonement and he loves talking about it. So we are going to talk to him more about it in later visits but he wants to learn more. So an interesting thing is John lives with his brother and he bought some trading cards. (Football, Baseball, Basketball, Nascar etc.) And he bought them from a guy who had three stores he owned because he was a sports memorabilia addict. He bought them for 300 dollars and he has right now around 4 million dollars’ worth of cards and that is a rough estimation. So to give you an example he has 9 Derek Jeter rookie cards that are worth 16,000 dollars each and he has some one of the kind cards that are priceless.

Saturday was an awesome day. One thing was it was humid and that wasn’t awesome but one thing that was is that Elder Kuila and I were in a neighborhood just walking around and I was just following him. We went down this one street and this kid almost hit me with his bike and the mom was like “HEY WATCH OUT FOR THE MISSIONARIES” I turned around and was like HUH? I went up and was like how do you know that we are missionaries? She said that her husband has family who are members so we talk with her for a while until the husband came home. We talked with him and I was like so you have family who are members. And he said "I grew up in the church and my wife was baptized when she was 18 and we just moved her about a month ago from San Diego and we want to come back to church." I was so shocked he was like yeah I thought my mom sent you here and we were like no we were just walking. The cool thing about this story was that we planned to go to this area but forgot until we looked at our planners’ haha so it was inspired

Random Moments.

Yesterday we were at a member’s house and they have two dogs. One of them is really smart and likes to un zip back packs and eat anything you have in there that is food. Well I put some cad berry eggs in there to have later. I had two bags. Well the dog got into them and ate the freaking things I was like really dog Thanks. So I found a dog who loves chocolate haha.

I hope yall have a good week. As I was writing I was hoping that anyone who reads this can understand what I’m saying and if it makes sense.

I hope it does, but I love yall and be safe this week.

Mar 18th Letter

Good Morning Utah!!!!!

How are things going in the state that is trying to warm up from the long cold winter.

The great state of Texas is warming up and turning up the humidity and yall know what that mean. Swimming in my own puddle of sweat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) haha

Well another week has come and gone. And here is a review of what we did this week.

On Monday it was pretty awesome. So Elder Kuila loves to snack so he likes going to this certain gas station it’s like the only ghetto one in our area. Well we went there on p-day and he got some stuff to snack on. As we got up to the cash register the attendant ask if he wanted a pipe?! Elder kuila said Ah no I don’t smoke the Gas attendants ask why not and how old are you and Elder Kuila said that he is 19 and it’s against what I believe. This went into a conversation of the gospel and our purpose as missionaries. And the attendant said I thought yall were I saw yall all the time in here. It was cool that even going into a gas station multiple times and getting noticed that you can help someone know a little more about us and what we believe.

Tuesday and Wednesday we did some service for a member of our ward there name is The Rodriguez family. And they are crazy and love to keep everything. Our service this week was to clean their garage. The first thing I need to mention is that people love not using their garage for the right purpose. They don’t use it to store their cars. They love to use it as a storage place and this family had a ton of stuff. The garage was horrible and the parents wanted us to do was to take everything out and clean stuff and organize the garage. Well it took us two days and it looks like we didn’t even put a dent into it. It is funny they love to fight with one another so the wife wanted everything out and thrown away while the husband wanted to keep everything he is pretty much a hoarder haha. He had so much empty boxes for no reason and he buys alot of things like the stuff they advertise on TV yeah he will buy that for no reason haha it’s kind of funny.

Thursday was a service day as well. We went to a nature center and did 4 hours of service in the middle of the day. Now I forgot that it was warming up down here so it kinda was not fun haha its’ getting really hot. We spent 4 hours digging up trees, there is some species that is a pest in the nature center and they cut down the trees and they left the roots and a little bit of the tree trunk so we dug up about 30 trees. Now these are smaller trees not huge one but baby ones but it was funny while I was trying to get some of the roots up I was using a pick ax to dig around the roots and to bring them up. Well this one would not come up so I was tugging and pulling and I was putting all my weight on it when SNAP!!!!! I was like yes finally I got the root nope it was the ax. I busted the ax and the handle in half. It wasn’t one with a wooden handle it was one of those really nice and expensive ones so yes I’m proud of that. That is my claim to fame right now. I knew i was strong and working out but I didn’t know that I was that buff ahahahahahah just kidding I’m weak. ha Oh yeah I forgot to use gloves so I got like two blisters that busted while working and I trip and fell and one of the stumps cut me haha it hurt but I’m a man hahaha

Friday was a miracle day to start off the day I got a text from President Pingree saying that he is coming to my district meeting. Okay I was so nervous but he showed up an hour late so it was towards the end so it was good but I was freaking out the whole time haha but lately we have decided to do a lot more finding. We have investigators that are not going anywhere. We have one who is Shawn and he is ready for the 13th of April to get baptized but we need more people to talk with. Elder Kuila and I have decided that we need to do some tracking, now I hate tracking with a passion but right now I’m willing to do it cause we need people and the members are not giving us anything. In the afternoon we went to a part of our area called Fox Run. We went to the first street and started knocking and the first door we found a person who is a friend of a member in another ward. She has gone to seminary a couple of times and would like to hear the message again so that was way awesome. Than we go down the street some more and found a black guy who would like to learn more. So that is two potentials in a matter of 20 mins that we have found so I’m getting excited. We had an appointment with an investigator so we were walking around talking and contacting people. When we went past a house that elder Kuila and his old companion had tracked into and they were interested but never could get a hold of them. Well they were outside doing yard work so we went up and talked with them. They were nice to us and they were trying to get this bush out and they were having a hard time with it. We asked if they wanted us to help and they said no. We waited for a few mins and we just got in there working on it they were happy that we helped and we got it out in a matter of mins. They were so nice that they wanted us to come by this Friday for dinner at 7pm so they seem really interested and I got high hopes for them becoming new investigators.

Missionary Moment:

This is a quote that a member gave in her talk that she gave Sunday in Sacrament Meeting and it hit me pretty hard and it put a whole new perspective on the way I do missionary work. It’s from a talk by President Eyring HEARTS BOUND TOGETHER. I strongly encourage yall to read it.

"Many of your deceased ancestors will have received a testimony that the message of the missionaries is true. When you received that testimony you could ask the missionaries for baptism. But those who are in the spirit world cannot. The ordinances you so cherish are offered only in this world. Someone in this world must go to a holy temple and accept the covenants on behalf of the person in the spirit world. That is why we are under obligation to find the names of our ancestors and ensure that they are offered by us what they cannot receive there without our help."

" For me, knowing that turns my heart not only to my ancestors who wait but to the missionaries who teach them. I will see those missionaries in the spirit world, and so will you. Think of a faithful missionary standing there with those he has loved and taught who are your ancestors. Picture as I do the smile on the face of that missionary as you walk up to him and your ancestors whom he converted but could not baptize or have sealed to family until you came to the rescue. I do not know what the protocol will be in such a place, but I imagine arms thrown around your neck and tears of gratitude."

For me knowing that I’m making a difference in people life is remarkable. I wanna be that missionary who has helped a member of some family receive the gospel for the first time and when it comes time to go to the spirit world I wanna see how the seed that I have planted has grown into something awesome. That to me is success. Sometimes I think that I’m not going anywhere but I know that everything I do is because god wants it to happen

I love yall have a great week and I’ll talk with yall soon.

Mar 11th Letter

Well this week was just a normal week nothing to fancy but nothing to boring. But I will let yall know what my week was like.

Our investigator Shawn is doing really well. We taught him on Tuesday, and we talked about the word of wisdom and he has no problem with anything that we are teaching him. I have never had anything like this before in my life Shawn is so golden and he is willing to do anything. I mean there are no faults at all its so weird but amazing. We gave him a date of April 13th to get baptized. He said that that sounds good, and warned us that he might feel like he would be ready to move it forward which is alright with us but it’s just amazing and he is involving his kids and they are loving it.

This week I went on an exchange with Elder Ririe it was fun. We spent the afternoon helping a member of his ward organize his food storage. It took forever and he had so much he really listened to the prophet in being prepared but he made us pizza so I was happy with that I can’t turn down food. haha We walked forever that day they don’t have a car or bikes. His other companion doesn’t want to bike since it’s too dangerous? I don’t know what he is thinking but we walked a lot which isn’t too bad it is nice weather. We went and taught there top investigator, we read the Book of Mormon with him and we helped him understand it. He was excited and we saw the joy he had in reading and he wants to learn more and has a desire it amazing. But all in all it was a good exchange. I love going on exchange and see how other missionaries work and learn from them.

So I want to let you know about this cool experience that happened to me on Thursday night at a dinner at a member’s house. We went over to this family named the Olsen’s. Bro Olsen is in the bishopric and is the first counselor. Bro Olsen has his dad living with them at their house and he is 92 yrs of age. He is living with them cause the dad lost his house so he is living with his son we were sitting eating at the dinner table when we were talking with them and Elder Kuila asked the dad where he is from he said that he grew up in Cache Valley. I immediately look at him and started asking questions like where did you live? And what did you do. I asked him where he lived and he said on an old town west of Logan Utah so I started naming towns and it was College Ward he lived and he had a farm there. I told him that I am from Hyrum Utah and he was oh wow ok I know where that is. So I was putting two and two together. He is older and farming. So I asked him if he knew Great Grandpa Christensen he said I don’t know sounds familiar and so I asked if he knew him by his nickname and he said YES. He knew Great Grandma Christensen. Now this is getting really weird that someone out here in Texas knows my grandparents. So I asked the ultimate question and that was if he knew Val Christensen (grandpa) and he said yeah is he the one that had the farm down by Millers. I said yeah he did. The guy’s name is Warren Olsen. He knew my grandparents and I was in a little shock at this moment and just wanted to talk with him about the life back then. He still has his farm in College Ward and a guy by the last name Jensen is running it his brothers are still out there!! Can you believe this!!!!!

Friday after district meeting we were walking to this less actives house for an appointment. And this car comes along us and asked if we parked the car and we said yeah? (now only members usually do this ask if we parked the car and where we are walking to ) so this guy I thought was a member but he asked to give us something and so I was sure I found out he was Jehovah witness. Right when I found out that he was I was like OH CRAP!! Here we go again. Here comes the bashing and that is exactly what happened. He was sitting there in his car talking to us; he said that he wasn’t trying to make us mad just wanted us to think. Honestly I was just getting pist off so I kept asking questions that he didn’t believe in like prophets and so on. But he said that he had been a missionary for his church for 18 yrs and today is his day off and he was telling us about how he does tracking. If there interested they get there personal info from a website and send them letters and call them he was like rude by saying that we have the title of Elder and that we only go by the spirit on knocking doors and blah blah BLAH! But he was just making me mad, trying to prove me wrong with the bible which is totally stupid cause there is so many versions of the bible out here. But he was quoting scripture to me and I just didn’t care so I finally asked. “So using no scripture reference what do you truly believe in?" He couldn’t give me a straight answer so he said whatever the bible teaches. I wanted to hear his testimony and he didn’t have one. So I tried to give him a mormon.org card and he wouldn’t accept it cause in their religion they can’t accept anything from anyone else. So I said well sir if you can’t accept mine I won’t accept yours. So he said alright and took his paper out of my hand and we went our ways. GRRRRRR...

So that is my week very interesting week to say the least but it sounds like yall had a blast in St George. I wish I was there but out here is a lot funnier but I hope yall have a blessed week. Stay safe Stay strong and Stay hungry.

I love Yall

Mar 4th Letter

*LOOK AT ME I GOT A WOODEN SPOOOON!!! EGHRRRRRRRR!!!!!

I hope yall had a good week. Is it still cold up there? Well I’m kinda getting sick of the cold down here in the morning its getting up in the 40's in the morning and sixties in the evening. Which is kinda chilly but it’s a whole lot better than Utah I know that for sure. haha So here are a couple of things that happen that was cool this week.. Not anything exciting this week but it was all good

GIT-R DONE

I want to update yall on some of our investigators that we have and the progression they are making.

Michael LaBlanc: This man is in his 60's and he seems like he is going to investigating the church for a while. Its kinda drives me and my companion nuts he has gone through 8 sets of missionaries, and no progress. He knows he needs and wants to be baptized but he makes a lot of excuses one of them is his wife he says that she is holding him back and he has some things he wants to take care of before he gets baptized. But this week we went over to his house and he was outside and we pulled up and sat down and talked with him. Now at this point we didn’t plan on going over there and talk with him and have no clue what we are going to teach him. But my companion comes up with an awesome question and it was this “did Jesus Christ have any excuses to not getting baptized?" he sat there for a while and was thinking we stayed there in silence also so the spirit can work on him. He spoke up a lil later saying " well i guess he didn’t " the point we tried to get across to him is that you don’t need any excuses in getting baptized in the name of the Lord. I gave him a scripture that states what do you have against being baptized in the name of the lord. ( Mosiah 18:10 ) he says that he needs to do things for himself but he always making excuses so he said that he is going to try and not make excuses anymore. According to Elder Kuila this is the biggest progress they have seen in him in over 3 months so I’m excited about that.

Shawn Beard: Shawn is doing amazing. Shawn is still really solid. This week we went over to his house and we had food storage noodles and salmon. It was actually pretty good we sat down with him and a member Shawn told me that his 6 yrs old daughter loves for me to come over and gets excited about me when I come over (crap I got a 6yrs old crushing on me HELP!! haha ) but he kinda scared me in the beginning cause I was asking him about is he ready for the 30th. He said that is what I wanna talk to you about at this point I was a lil nervous cause I thought he was going to say that he doesn’t wanna get baptized. But he told us that he is going to be out of town that day and he wants to move his date he said it could be earlier or a lil later. But we mentioned to him that he should pray about it and let us know so he can give us a date he also told us about a dream that he had last week he had a dream that he was talking with Jesus Christ and he was quoting scripture to him. He woke up that morning feeling the holy ghost and he was mad that he couldn’t remember the scripture he was quoting but he said that he has never had these kinda dreams before until we came along and he mention that he loves this church cause it’s the only one that has seek him out and came and found him when he needed us the most.

Julia Rodriguez: She is a new investigator that we got this week. She is 17 yrs old and she is a friend of a member in our ward. Julia became friends with Michaela this year and Julia wanted to know why she didn’t do anything bad like swear or stuff like that and Michaela mention to her about her religion and her believes and standards. Michaela wanted us to come over Friday and to teach her. Well we went over to Julia’s house a week ago and we asked for her but we later found out the girl we talked to was actually her and she gave us a fake name and said she wasn’t there but this time we got the real Julia. The lesson didn’t not go the way I wanted it to the spirit was not there because it was her friends fault Michaela. She was so distracting just randomly giggling, making loud noises and just being rude while we were trying to teach her and her friend. It was frustrating cause it made it awkward for her friend to be there. Needless to say I came out of there a little frustrated but I know something will come out of it.

Saturday: We volunteered at the Woodlands marathon. We had a station that we handed out water cups and Gatorade cups to all the runners that was coming by all Morning long I said GATORADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GATORADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Just like in water boy ) It was a lot of fun and I saw some of my old members in my last area and also some investigators.

Sunday: So the cool thing that happened yesterday was after church. We went and stopped by a less actives house. Surprisingly he was home and he let us in and he was super excited that we came by. He mentioned to us that he broken up with his girlfriend and he was glad that we came by and visited with him. He is a recovering alcoholic and has a problem with the word wisdom. He asked us to come by more often and to visit with him. I think it’s a miracle because we need more people to teach as far as less active wise and he needs us.

I just wanna end to tell yall that I love you and thank you for everything that yall do for me. I appreciate yall every moment and think about you daily. I’m so grateful for the love of families and the gospel is in our life,

I hope all yall have a good week and stay safe and thank you for your prayers and support.

Love

Elder Christensen
